Oxford Street (1999)
Four men walked, jumped, and danced the length of Oxford Street, responding to the physical prompts of a lead performer. Familiar gestures were repeated until they resembled a shared ritual, echoing the movements of shoppers flowing through one of London’s busiest streets. Removed from their everyday purpose, ordinary actions became strangely unfamiliar. Despite the constant movement and noise of Oxford Street, the performance created unexpected moments of stillness. People paused, watched, and quietly followed the performers, as the physical rituals of consumer culture briefly gave way to observation and reflection.
