WORK TITLE
Leicester Square (1999) Performed with Delta Streete, two performers lay motionless in Leicester Square, quietly interrupting one of London’s busiest public spaces. Inspired by the structure of American Gothic by Grant Wood, the work reflected on British identity through every day public behaviour rather than symbolism. The performance quickly became the subject of public discussion. People gathered, watched, and debated what they were seeing, while an ambulance crew briefly checked on one of the performers before leaving. The work became as much about the public’s response as the action itself, revealing how two people simply lying quietly in a public space could provoke curiosity, concern, and conversation.
