Father Christmas’ Grotto Journey (1995) An abstracted mobile Father Christmas grotto was walked through the streets of Bristol for three hours in the rain. Removed from shopping centres and festive displays, the familiar figure became something unfamiliar—part ritual, part memory, and part absurd apparition. People stopped, smiled, hesitated, or simply carried on, unsure how to respond. By shifting Father Christmas from the commercial spaces that normally give him meaning into the everyday landscape of the city, the work questioned how easily symbols, beliefs, and identities become dependent upon the systems that support them.
