Durational Package (2008)
Created during artist Mark Greenwood’s Red Ape Proximity Effect project, the work responded to the remains of two previous performances. Over two days, every object left behind was carefully packed into labelled cardboard boxes. Eventually, the performer packed himself as well. What began as a practical task gradually became the performance. The work used archiving as a way of understanding what had come before. Objects left through chance, improvisation, and temporary actions were reordered, preserved, and given a new context. In packing the remains of earlier performances, the work quietly questioned where meaning resides in the original action, the objects left behind, or in the act of preserving them.
